The Night Before Your Appointment
Moisturize Your Hands
A light moisturizer the evening before is ideal.
If your hands are dry or rough, apply a high-quality, fragrance-free hand lotion before bed. Dry fingerprints often produce lighter ridge detail, which can increase the chance of a rejected submission.
Avoid:
Petroleum jelly
Thick ointments
Excessive lotion immediately before your appointment
After Your Appointment
Once your fingerprints have been submitted electronically:
The California Department of Justice receives your submission.
If required, the fingerprints are forwarded to the FBI.
Processing times vary depending on the requesting agency and current workload.
Your employer or requesting agency will typically receive the results directly. In most cases, you will not receive the results yourself unless you specifically requested a Personal Record Review.
The Day of Your Appointment
Please avoid:
Excess lotion
Sunscreen on your hands
Clean hands produce the best fingerprint images.
